    Edina Public Schools provides a comprehensive program for students with disabilities. Services are provided to students who range in age from birth through 21. Most students receive services in their neighborhood school and when possible in their regular class setting.

    ESL/ELL

    The Edina School District offers an educational program to meet the needs of students who are English Language Learners in grades K-12. This program addresses two areas: language acquisition and cultural adjustment.

    In the area of language acquisition, the goal of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is to provide students with the opportunity to develop communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, thereby enabling the students to be successful within the academic mainstream classroom.

    The program will assist the students through their cultural adjustment by helping them develop an understanding of American culture. At the same time, the students will be encouraged to share their cultural backgrounds and realize the importance of their role in a multicultural society.

    Response to Intervention (RtI)

    Response to Instruction and Intervention (RtI) is a multi-level framework for student growth in the classroom. The framework provides a process for teachers to ensure personalized learning for all students to reach their potential. The foundation of RtI includes: data collection, instruction, and interventions. RtI is about clearly identifying students’ needs, designing a tiered system of support that rests on strong core instruction, frequently monitoring students who are underachieving, and changing interventions when students are not progressing to their expected level.     Success Center

    The mission of Success Center, working in partnership with staff, family, and community, is to provide educational support and instructional opportunities that enhance student success in the classroom.

    • We recognize the uniqueness of each student and personalize his or her learning through a Continual Learning Plan (CLP).
    • We encourage parental participation and involvement in each student's attendance and goals.
    • We seek to provide instruction that develops student competence and confidence in the skills required for school success.

    Title 1

    Title I is a federally funded program designed to assist students below grade level in reading and math. The amount of funding is based on the number of students who qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. All Title I services and programming are supplemental to the regular classroom instruction.

    Speech/Language 

    Typically, infancy and early childhood are periods of intense development in all areas of communication. Specialists in early childhood communication development study the following components of communication: sound use (phonology), the symbolic use of words and sentences (morphology and syntax), the acquisition of meaningful vocabulary (semantics), and the use of language in a social context (pragmatics).
